KNIGHTDALE - When the Knights open the 2011-12 hoops season Monday night, it won't be against a stranger.

The Knightdale girls tip off their regular season at Enloe High School at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7.

Enloe has become a bitter name to those in the Knightdale boys and girls programs -- especially for the boys -- during the past two years.

The Eagle boys and girls soared in 2009 to sweep four regular-season games.

In November that year, the Enloe boys won 84-72 against the Knights, and the Enloe girls dominated their game 86-50. In December 2009, the Eagle boys again won by a handful of possessions, 75-65, while Enloe's girls dominated again, 72-35.

The Knightdale boys had a third stab at the Eagles in the third week of February and in the third round of the state playoffs, but again Enloe (27-2 entering the playoff game) emerged victorious against Knightdale (22-7) in the 74-67 final on the Eagles' home court.

The Knight teams didn't come close to getting even in 2010, but did manage to break even with the Eagles.

Knightdale's boys opened last year's double header with a 58-52 loss at home on Nov. 22, but followed with a 67-61 win at Enloe on Nov. 30. Despite losing the first game, the Knights averaged 3.5 more points in the first half and 6.5 more points in the second half than Enloe in the two games last year.

The Lady Knights improved significantly after losing by 20 points, 68-48, to the Eagles on Nov. 22 at home. Eight days later the Knightdale girls pulled off a 46-44 win in Raleigh.

This year's girls game appears to be a battle of Enloe's experience versus Knightdale's desire to win.

Anthony Byrd, head coach of the Knightdale girls, admitted his team lacks in the experience department this season, and that the group would have to develop around post player Amber Wright and guard Ajee Smith. Both players are juniors.

Enloe's girls team, on the other hand, is comprised of at least four playmakers from last year's team, including senior guard Dana Brown, who averaged 18.9 points per game last season. Brown is joined by senior and defensive specialist Aleyha Johnson, senior Ebonie Coley and sophomore Candice Jones, who coach Pina Baker-Hunt said was her most consistent player last year.

Despite the experience gap between the two teams, Baker-Hunt isn't discounting the Lady Knights.

"We like to have competitive games, and Knightdale is quick and athletic," she said. "They're going to be a good battle and the team that makes the least amount of mistakes will likely be the successful team."

Enloe and Knightdale look to stack up more evenly on the boys' end of things.

Both teams return four seniors. While all four Knight seniors -- Brian Okoye, Tabari Boykin, Curry Lassiter and Jeremy Lee -- played the entirety of last season, the four Eagle seniors did not see significant playing time.

Enloe coach Tommy Moore said junior guards Shawn McGee and Mike Dix will steer his team this season. That fact Enloe is a guard-led team creates the potential for the boys' contest to be a shootout. Knightdale coach Battle Watkins knew his team would be guard heavy since the first day of practice. Moore also named post player James Miller, who of the returning players played the most in the Eagle interior last year, to his list of role players.
