I found it ironic that the Eastern Wake News went into detail about Tim Hinnant's financial contributors, yet failed to explain Harold Broadwell's contributors.
First of all, we don't even know if Broadwell contributed any of his own money to his campaign. What we do know, is that some of his major contributors support government assisted housing. Now, those of us who regularly attend town meetings and know what that means, also know Broadwell broke the tie, in favor of supporting one of the most recent "non-sustaining developments." Harold Broadwell's biggest contributors are: Lucius Jones and a PAC funded by of people who live outside of the city limits. They include William Parrish, William Barker and Steve Stroud, among others, all developers.
At the last town meeting, I kept hearing the term "sustainability" being bandied about, for our developments, and construction. I pay roughly $900 in home and storefront property taxes, for one person, to Wendell, compared to the Sandy Ridge, which contributes $1664.68, with 45 units, that could house anywhere from 45 to 175 people. Now, I am only one person. Is that development sustainable, given the costs to maintain that many units, with fire, police, and health? That works out to $37 per unit, versus my $900. Just one police call, on one unit, puts us way in the negative.
The mayor proceeded to pat himself on the back for the many meetings he attended. He neglected to mention what he accomplished at those meetings. Striving for an extra half cent sales tax? Is there any guarantee if we support this, that Wendell will actually reap any of the benefits?
Frankly, for all of us who serve on boards and committees, are involved in the community programs, and are active members in the Wendell community, that is highly affected by the board's decisions, I hope that I speak for them in supporting Tim Hinnant for mayor.
Hinnant believes it is important to listen to and meet Wendell citizens and non-citizens, not sit in meetings that accomplish little for Wendell, and frivolously spend taxpayer money. He wants to make our town a better place to live, and to be proud of.
I, personally, will be supporting Tim Hinnant for mayor. See you at the polls Nov. 8.
