KNIGHTDALE - Mayoral candidate Jun Lee, who earlier this month was fined $442 for a campaign finance violation, has amended his finance reports and is awaiting a ruling from the Wake County Board of Elections.
In October, Lee reported that he paid a campaign worker $442 in cash for going door-to-door to promote Lee's mayoral campaign.
Political candidates are prohibited from using cash for disbursements over $50.
But Lee said the report was an accounting error, and payments to the campaign worker were made in separate allotments of less than $50.
Lee said his revised campaign finance reports wouldn't face violations. He expects the fine to be waived.
"It was an innocent mistake," Lee said. "But we fixed it and do not expect a penalty."
Candidates who are able to disprove wrongdoing are able to avoid the fine, said Kim Strach, the deputy director for campaign finance at the North Carolina Board of Elections.
A judgment is expected on his case this week.
"I just need additional information before I waive the fine at this point," said Sheryll Harris, compliance specialist for Wake's Board of Elections. "We are still in the process of reviewing the reports."
