I applaud your bold headline on the Sept. 21 front page of the Eastern Wake News - "ACLU apologizes for profiling claim."

I found much of the article's contents to be alarming, especially the manner in which Ms. Parker of the American Civil Liberties Union handled this situation. I can only wonder how many other times she and her agency have responded too quickly and without all of the facts in similar situations. While not surprised, I was alarmed that she did not feel compelled to alert the media of her mishandling of the situation - keeping in mind that she involved the media when making her initial allegations.

Equally alarming were statements by the involved church's pastor.

To his first point, I remind him and others that there are reasons for the laws governing driving with a valid license, registration and insurance. The most important reason for requiring a license is to ensure that the driver knows the rules and guidelines for operating a motor vehicle safely as well as knowing the laws that must be followed to ensure safety for all individuals on the highways.

To his second point, I agree that the police should not have to issue a second or third ticket to the same person who continues to drive without a license. I am sure the police would prefer to not have to do this as well. Where we differ, however, is that the pastor seems to feel one ticket should be the limit even if the driver does not take steps to get a license. Police should continue to ticket unlicensed drivers each time they are caught, just as they would ticket and arrest violators of other laws.

I grew up in a house on South Arendell Avenue, and I have witnessed, firsthand, speeders and other DMV violators for years. I commend all members of the local law enforcement agencies and hope that they will continue to hold checkpoints where needed - including one here on South Arendell Avenue.
