WENDELL - Police from here were joined by officers from Zebulon and Knightdale to conduct a traffic checkpoint Saturday night in front of Food Lion.
The checkpoint produced 20 charges, including one for assault on an officer after a man jumped out of his car to help a friend who had become unruly with officers.
According to Wendell Lt. Bobby Langston, John Milton, 20, of 311 Wall Street, Wendell, was charged with assault on an officer after he jumped on four officers who were trying to subdue another man, identified as Jeremiah Campbell, 20, of 219 E. Fourth St., Wendell.
Langston said the incident happened after police pulled a car out of the checkpoint on suspicion of drug possession. Officers searched the car, but found no drugs. The two people in that car called friends to come pick them up. Campbell and Milton arrived and, a short time later, they began arguing with the men who had initially been stopped.
Officers approached the group and told Campbell and Milton to leave. Campbell refused to get in his car and began yelling at Zebulon police Officer Brandon Lane. Lane attempted to arrest him and Campbell began fighting back. Three other officers were helping Lane subdue Campbell when Milton got out of the car and jumped on all four officers. Lane told him to get off the officers and when Milton didn't obey, Lane tased him.
Campbell was charged with obstructing an officer.
In addition to the assault charge, police registered 19 other charges include two for obstructing an officer and two for possession of marijuana.
