DURHAM - Riverside's men exacted revenge for last season's second-round playoff loss when the Pirates hosted Knightdale last Monday.
The 84-60 loss was the Knights' second in a row after falling to Enloe - the team that beat Knightdale in the third round of last season's playoffs in February - the Wednesday before, ending a five-game winning streak.
Coach Battle Watkins said the team played well in the first half, but played poorly throughout the third quarter and early in the fourth.
"To beat a good team we have to play four quarters or 32 minutes, not just one half," Watkins said.
Knightdale led 22-21 through one quarter, and went into the half tied with the Pirates at 35, but was outscored 22-7 in the third quarter and 27-18 in the fourth.
"We played poor defense in the third quarter - gave up too many offensive rebounds and took bad shots," Watkins said. "We got down a few points and individual players started taking some selfish shots."
Watkins said against a big team like Riverside there will normally only be one opportunity to take a good shot on any given possession, but the Knights fell short of that task late in the game.
In the first half, Knightdale went 5-8 from 3-point land and gave up a mere four turnovers. In the second half the team turned the ball over 11 times.
Ronnie Frederick led the Knights with 14 points, Tyler Nicholson followed with 13 points and five rebounds, and Steven Geter ended with seven rebounds. Eleven of Nicholson's 13 points were scored in the first half.
"As a team we must play a complete game," Watkins reemphasized. "This was a quality opponent with lots of weapons and we let them get going in the second half. Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes in some of these tough non-conference games to help us in our conference down the stretch in January and February."
