KNIGHTDALE - It was a worst-case scenario for the home team. Enloe put an end to the Knights' five-game winning streak in last Wednesday's varsity men's basketball game.
Enloe outscored the Knightdale (6-6, 3-0 in the Greater Neuse) by 14 points in the second quarter as the Eagles rolled to a 75-65 win on the road.
Knightdale senior Tyler Nicholson offered a plain and simple explanation for the visitor's scoring spree.
"Whenever we get in a hole things go wrong," the 6-foot-2-inch wing said after the game.
The fact that the Eagles (8-0, 2-0 in the Cap-7) ousted the Knights by 12 in the teams' first meeting of the season in November didn't make it any easier for the loss to be taken lightly - especially since the Knights' losing streak to Enloe dates back to a 7-point, third-round state playoff loss at Enloe in February.
The two teams knew what the other had to offer heading into the highly-touted matchup Wednesday, but the Knights couldn't stop the Eagles.
"We were expecting the pick and roll and screens on the big men," Nicholson said. "We practiced getting around that."
But Enloe's big men Melvin Tabb and Jared Blakney combined for 29 points with Tabb hitting eight of nine free throws. Topping those figures off, Emanuel Chapman and Charles Ashley scored 12 points each and D.J Rich posted 11, and as a team the Eagles went 9-11 from the line in the second half.
"We've got to get more boards next time and get the secondary and whole team down the court," Nicholson said. "We're faster than that."
Knightdale trailed by 5 points heading into the fourth quarter but Enloe struck promptly with a pair of threes to take the double-digit lead. The momentum favoring the visitors was enough to rush the Knights into forced shots and passes, resulting in multiple turnovers.
As time expired the Knights were forced to test the Eagles from the free throw line, and the Eagles met the challenge, connecting 82 percent of the time.
Knightdale's Steven Geter went 4-4 from 3-point range on the night, but as a team Enloe answered, hitting 75 percent from behind the line down the stretch.
Knightdale faced another 2009 playoff foe - Durham Riverside - on the road Monday. Results were not available at press time.
Enloe's next action will be in the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational at Broughton High School. The tournament runs from Dec. 26-30.
