ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a Wake County convenience store break-in that led to a fatal shooting that involved a Wake sheriff's deputy.

Wake deputies said they think the man, Jonathan Edward Carr, 36, may have been an accomplice of two other men in the break-in: Cornelius Pierre Harrison, 24, and Byron Lendell Williams, 24, both of Rocky Mount.

The Wake sheriff's office reported that one of their officers, Master Deputy Brad Manville, shot and killed Harrison during an altercation in a wooded area in Zebulon on Monday.

Manville, who has been with the sheriff's office a little more than three years, has been placed on administrative duty while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the shooting, standard policy when a law officer discharges a service weapon.

Police officers picked up Carr at his mother's house at 704 Cascade Avenue in Rocky Mount about 1 a.m. today, authorities reported.

Carr is wanted by the Wake sheriff's office for questioning about his suspected involvement in a reported break-in attempt Monday morning at the Swift Mart, a convenience store at 1728 Marshburn Road in Wendell.

Sheriff's investigators think Carr was with Cornelius Harrison and Byron Williams during the break-in just before 4 a.m. Monday.

The sheriff's office was notified about the break-in when an alarm sounded at the store. When investigators arrived, witnesses told them that they saw three men running from the store, Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Monday.

But the suspected burglars managed to escape, and the deputies left the area.

It was about 8 a.m. when another resident called 911 to report two suspicious-looking men walking along N.C. 97, about a half-mile from the Swift Mart, deputies reported.

Two men, who fit the description of the break-in suspects, saw the deputies and fled into the woods, the sheriff's office reported.

As the trio fled deeper into the woods, deputies called Manville and his canine partner, Jagger. They also requested a Highway Patrol helicopter to help locate the suspected burglars.

Manville and Jagger tracked the men about three miles into the woods. A team of deputies --- with the Highway Patrol helicopter hovering overhead -- surrounded the suspects.

Jagger bit and captured Williams. Deputies handcuffed him while Manville and Jagger continued their search, the sheriff's office reported.

Manville and Jagger were alone when they caught up with Cornelius Harrison. A struggle ensued and Manville, who suffered a broken hand, shot Cornelius Harrison, the sheriff reported.

The Wake sheriff's office or Rocky Mount police were immediately available for comment today.
