EASTERN WAKE COUNTY - East Wake's varsity men's and women's basketball teams ousted Harnett Central's and Knightdale's squads topped Smithfield-Selma's in Friday night's matchups in the Greater Neuse.

The wins marked the first of the season for both women's teams.

The Knightdale men worked their way to a winning record with a pair of wins last week, and Friday's win at Smithfield-Selma was convincing to say the least. The Knights downed the Spartans 65-28 on the road to advance to 6-4 overall, 3-0 in the Greater Neuse.

On Tuesday the Knights cruised past Southeast Raleigh 81-55 at home, boosting themselves to a 2-0 conference record.

The team takes on playoff rival Enloe today (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. at home, and travels to Garner to face the Trojans Friday night, also at 7:30.

The varsity women didn't blow Smithfield out of the water like the men did, but Cana Marriott did hit a three to go up two points with six seconds left in the game en route to a 50-48 victory over the Spartans - Knightdale's first win of the season.

The win brought comfort to the Lady Knights after the team dropped by a mere five, 50-45, to Southeast Raleigh Tuesday afternoon.

Coach Anissa Little said it was the best her team has played all season.

"We were down one with 34 seconds to go, turned it over, and had to foul," Little said.

The week left the team 1-9 overall, 1-3 in the Greater Neuse River Conference.

Knightdale's women face Enloe today (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. at Enloe, and travel to Garner to face the Trojans Friday night at 6.

The East Wake varsity men's basketball team opened the conference season with a 67-52 win Harnett Central Friday night.

The victory followed Wednesday's 76-58 loss to Wakefield and Tuesday's 57-55 win over Wake Forest-Rolesville.

The two wins and a loss left the Warriors 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference. The team hosts West Johnston Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Warrior varsity team got its first win of the season in Friday's conference opener with Harnett Central, topping the Trojans 50-39.

Dropping to Wakefield 56-31 on Wednesday and to Wake Forest-Rolesville 53-36 on Tuesday, the East Wake women's record stands at 1-6 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

The Lady Warriors host West Johnston Friday at 6 p.m.
