Rams' and Knights' Minis and Mightys split in Wendell
WENDELL - A pair of overtime East Wake Football League games between Wendell and Knightdale took place Saturday at Thompson Field. The Halloween games proved spooky for Wendell's Mini Mites and Knightdale's Mighty Mites - both undefeated teams until their neighbors had a say-so.Mini Mites:Knightdale 14, Wendell 7 (OT)Wendell's Christopher Hunter rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to start the scoring at 5:34 in the second quarter, and Collin Lewis punched in the 1-point conversion for the 7-0 lead. But the Knights answered promptly. Corey Larkins took a 50-yard rush down the left sideline for six and ran in the conversion for the tie not even two minutes after the Rams hit the scoreboard. The two teams fought back and forth through the final minutes of regulation, but time expired. A college-style overtime with offensive stabs from the 10-yard line ensued. That's when Knightdale's Jalen Brooks carried his weight, and then some. With the Knights on offense first, Brooks fought his way through the Wendell defense to score a touchdown and 1-point conversion. Then on defense, Brooks made a stop on Lewis on the Rams' fourth down play to preserve the 14-7 Knightdale win.Wendell Mini Mites (No. 1) face No. 4 Holly Springs Gold this Saturday at Louisburg. Fifth quarter begins at noon.Knightdale Mini Mites (No. 4) face No. 1 Oak Grove at Zebulon on Sunday. Fifth quarter begins at 2 p.m.Mighty Mites:Wendell 26, Knightdale 20 (OT)Wendell opened the scoring in this game as well, and this time would end it.C.J. Mason started the show with a 47-yard touchdown, but Victor Dunston was stopped by Knightdale's Keion White on the conversion attempt. As the first quarter came to a close, Dunston got even, reversing the field to rush for 25 yards and 6 point. Peyton Creech then took to the air to hit Mason for the 2-point conversion and the 14-0 lead. With 5:01 left in the first half, Knightdale's Trey Gresham took off down the right sideline and never looked back until 30-plus yards and 6 points later. Wendell stood solid on defense on the conversion as Rams Dominique Thomas and Timmy Bridgers teamed up to hold Omar Smith from crossing the line. When Mason scored again with just over a minute left in the half, it looked as though a 20-6 lead would spin a different final result in the game, but the Knights continued to knock on the door.Gresham picked up his second touchdown of the afternoon with just over four minutes left in the third quarter, but the Rams stopped another conversion to keep the visitors trailing one full possession, 20-12. But the Knight defense forced Wendell to punt on the next drive and White made Wendell pay. He took in a 29-yarder on the ground, and with Gresham's 2-point conversion the score knotted at 20 as the fourth quarter approached.Wendell had an opportunity inside the 5 yard line with six minutes left in the game, but Knightdale Derrick Chance fell on a fumble to prevent any damage. A Knightdale fourth-and-one on its own 30 yard line followed, but a pair of penalties left the Rams back in the driver's seat on the Knightdale 10 yard line with 2:00 left, but the Knights held on to force the overtime. But in overtime Knightdale fumbled on the very first play of the 10-yard try, and the Rams gladly recovered. Making the play worth while, it was Dunston who took a handoff to the right, missed three tackles and scored for the 26-20 win on the Rams' first down play.Wendell Mighty Mites (No. 2) face the No. 3 North Division team at Louisburg this Saturday.
