Warriors fall in second half
Cougars pounce on three turnovers
WENDELL - Wake Forest-Rolesville capitalized on three second-half turnovers to earn a hard-fought 19-0 victory over East Wake on Friday night. The Cougars rushed for 196 yards, including 116 in the second half behind bruising running back Trea Jones. Jones racked up 104 yards for the game.On the other side, the WF-R defense held the Warriors to 1 rushing yard in the last two periods.Warrior coach Jimmy Williams said the lack of attack on the ground boiled down to poor blocking on the offensive line."We're missing three starters who are all on crutches, so it's going to be a problem," he said.Williams said the unceasing rain didn't effect that aspect of the game at all, saying "if you can't block in the rain, you can't block in the sunshine - it doesn't matter."With the game scoreless at the half, Wake Forest-Rolesville got its first break with 10:40 left in the third when it recovered a fumble at the East Wake 26. Five plays later, quarterback Dan Tomchik found his favorite receiver Fabian Seabrooks for a nine-yard score. The Cougars' next opportunity came early in the fourth period on a muffed punt at the Warriors' 19.Jones wasted little time getting his team on the scoreboard again with a 10-yard run up the middle. The two-point run was stopped leaving the score 12-0.After an interception, WF-R added its final touchdown. James Harris plowed in from eight yards out for the TD.First-year coach Reggie Lucas, whose club is 2-0, said his team wasn't looking ahead to next week's showdown with Southern Durham."I honestly don't think we were looking ahead," he said. "We were focused, but we knew East Wake was going to be tough. And they were. We had our hands full."Wake Forest-Rolesville's defense stifled the Warriors and held them to 58 yards rushing in the game. After admitting the second half was an area the Warriors needed to tighten up after the week one loss to Jack Britt, Williams said not much changed for his team in week two."We're not playing very good second half football. We're making too many mistakes. We've made it very obvious we can play with these last two opponents, then we just self-distruct," Williams said. The 15-year veteran coach said his team will be focusing on his team and his team only this week as it prepares for Friday's road game against Millbrook."If we block, we'll have a chance," he said. "If we don't, we won't. It's a simple game."Aaron Moody of the Eastern Wake News contributed to this report.
