Wendell All-Stars crowned

WENDELL — After winning Districts, the Wendell 11-12 All-Star softball team travelled to Wilkesboro and won the State Championship over the weekend of July 17-19.

On Saturday the seven teams in the bracket took to the field.

Wendell first faced Alexander Gold and won the coin toss to be dubbed the home team. Parker Brantley pitched the entire game (5 1/2 innings) for Wendell, facing 30 batters, resulting in six strikeouts and eight walks. She threw 116 pitches in the 10-4 win over Alexander Gold.

Game two came later that evening against Granite Falls. Wendell lost the coin toss, but not the game. Katy Holt pitched the entire six innings for Wendell, facing 22 batters, resulting in four strikeouts and one walk on 56 pitches. Wendell won 8-0.

In the championship game Wendell met Alexander Gold for a rematch. Kelsie Hocutt pitched the entire game for Wendell. Hocutt faced 21 batters, and produced four strikeouts and three walks on 66 pitches. The game ended in the 5th inning with Wendell winning by 10 runs. The final score was 13-3.

The team batting average over the course of the tournament was .370. On base percentage was .520. The Wendell All-Stars averaged 11 runs per game and allowed only two by their opponents on average. Individual stats over the three games in the state tourney are as follows:

Samantha Smith — 3-6, three singles, three RBIs, two BB, four runs scored, and four stolen bases; Brittany Brannan — 2-6, two singles, two RBIs, two BB, one run scored, two stolen bases; Parker Brantley — 3-8, two singles, three RBIs, one run scored and one stolen base; Peyton Pollard — 3-8, two singles, one BB, two RBIs, eight runs scored, four stolen bases; Kelsie Hocutt — 5-9, four singles, one double, one BB, five RBIs, two runs scored, one stolen base; Erin James — 4-9, four singles, three RBIs, one BB, four runs scored, six stolen bases; Katy Holt — 2-8, two singles, four RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases; Jasmine McAbee — 2-9, two singles, two RBI, two BB, four runs scored, two stolen bases; Erica Adams — 4-8, four singles, six RBIs, one BB, one stolen base; Sidney Jordan — one BB, one run scored; AnnaBeth Watkins — 2-5, two singles, two RBIs, one BB, four runs scored, and four stolen bases.
