A native of Zebulon, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired as the assistant superintendent of Edgecombe County Schools. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June C. Massey and a son, Jeffrey L. Massey.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary M. Underwood and her husband David of Raleigh and Becky M. Hodgson and her husband Eric of Lorton, Va.; one son, Michael L. Massey of Raleigh; and three grandsons. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Zebulon. Burial will follow in Zebulon Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home beginning at 1 p.m.
