June May Fowler, 85, died May 21 at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community. Funeral is scheduled for May 24 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Burial will be at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.

She lived with her family for many years at 5009 Shamrock Drive. She was born June 26, 1922, daughter of the late Frank Spruill “Jake” May and Blanche Stowe May in Los Angeles, Calif. She graduated from Wendell High School and Virginia Intermont College. She was married for 56 years to Lt. Col. Stephen Fowler who preceded her in death. On Sept. 19, 1979, she received the American Cancer Society Whittaker Award in honor of her work with Reach To Recovery, a program which she helped start in 1971. She was past chairman and board member of the American Cancer Society. Her dad pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 1932 and struck out Babe Ruth twice in the same game.

Surviving: daughters, Jackie F. Smith and husband Lowell Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., Stephanie F. Evans and husband David Evans of Wilmington, Del., Debra F. Riddle and husband the Rev. Julian Riddle of Surfside Beach, S.C., Faith F. Spencer and husband David Spencer of Wilmington; grandchildren, Deborah June E. Andrews, Steven Jake Kruger, Kirk Anthony Kruger, Kelly Reneé Riddle, Kristen Marie Riddle, Joshua Lee Riddle, Sarah Elizabeth Spencer, Katherine Diane Spencer; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Danielle and Mark Andrews, Kade Riddle, Kaeleigh and Conor Kruger.
