Yvonne Saleeby Creech
MIDDLESEX — Yvonne Saleeby Creech, 58, of 1634 Friendship Church Road, died Sept. 17 at Rex Healthcare after a strong fight with cancer. Memorial service was Sept. 20 at Lee's Chapel Baptist Church.

She was born April 20, 1949, in Morehead City, daughter of the late Albert Amein Saleeby and Julia Fortescue Saleeby. She began work at Cherry Point Marine Base as a key punch operator. She also worked at EPA in Raleigh and retired from the state of North Carolina as a computer programmer and analyst. She was very knowledgeable in computer languages and programming. She also appeared in several print and television advertisements. She was an active member of Lee's Chapel Baptist Church where she had participated in teaching and other programs.

Surviving: husband of 27 years, Ashley Creech; children, Ashley Creech Jr. of Graham, Laura Creech of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Lynda Saleeby and husband Ken of Morehead City, Julie Goldman and husband Richard of New Bern; brother, Albert Saleeby Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother-in-law, Wayne Creech and wife Cecilia of Raleigh; numerous nieces and nephews.

Linwood D. Chalk
ZEBULON — Linwood D. Chalk, 70, died Sept. 18 after many months of declining health. Funeral was Sept. 21 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Burial was at Beulah Christian Baptist Church, Zebulon.

He made his home for many years at 6517 Mitchell Mill Road, Zebulon. He was born in Franklin County Oct. 5, 1936, son of the late Heathey Wiley Chalk Sr. and Nolie Wilson Chalk. He retired with 30 years of service as a machine operator with Westinghous/ABB. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Lee Chalk; and brother, H.W. Chalk Jr.

Surviving: wife, Susan Morgan Chalk; son, Ray Chalk and wife Shelby of Zebulon; sisters, Elsie C. Narron of Raleigh, Betty C. Keith of Rolesville; brothers, Harvey B. Chalk of Knightdale, Bobby R. Chalk of Zebulon; numerous nieces and nephews.

BUNN — Edna P. Patton, 82, died Sept. 10. Funeral was Sept. 12 in the chapel of Lancaster Funeral & Cremation, Louisburg. Burial was in the Patton family cemetery.

Dorothea Walz Knox
BENSON — Dorothea Walz Knox, 87, died Sept. 10 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center.

She was born in Fort Lee, N.J., May 19, 1920, daughter of the late Lewis Edward Walz and Josephine Lahm Walz. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Knox; grandson, Jason Gelinas; and sister, Josephine Mulach.

Surviving: son, Mark A. Knox and wife Janet of Raleigh; daughter, Francine M. Knox and fiancé Leo Kosakowski of Longs, S.C.; grandchildren, Matthew Knox, Christopher Knox, Michael Gelinas, Justin Tabor; brother, Louis Walz of Massapequa, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Frances Porter of Levittown, N.Y.

She had requested that there be no services but that she be remembered through the scholarship fund for her grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jason Gelinas Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Francine M. Knox, 2133 Goodson Drive, Longs, SC 29568.

Mildred Frazier Smith
RALEIGH — Mildred Frazier Smith, 86, of 5917 Forestville Road, died Sept. 8 at Wellington Nursing Center, Knightdale. Funeral was Sept. 10 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel. Private family committal was at New Knightdale Baptist Church cemetery.

She was born Feb. 7, 1921, daughter of the late Joe Cephas Frazier and Sally Ellen Frazier. She graduated from Knightdale High School and was a member of Knightdale Baptist Church. She was called “Bill” by her husband and “Biba” by her grandchildren. She and her husband operated the family farm until their health declined. She was a good cook, an accomplished seamstress, gardener and keeper of the Smith family traditions. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Acral Smith, Feb. 5, 2007; sisters, Maude, Hattie, Alice and Bessie; and brothers, George and David.

Surviving: daughter, Alma Ellen Smith of Raleigh; son, George R. Smith and wife Meredith of Raleigh; grandchildren, Dawn Cox and husband Kevin, Kris Pearce and husband Rudy Jr., Leigh Gibson and husband Jeff, Jamie Smith and fiancé Chris Fredricks, Shane Smith; great-grandchildren, Rudy Pearce III, Courtney Pearce, Morgan Cox, MacKenzie Cox, Macy Cox, Colten Gibson, Cannen Gibson, Camren Gibson; brother, Charlie Frazier of Raleigh; sisters, Emory Clinebelle of Knightdale, Mary Jo Avants of Oxford, Billie Holloman of Aulander.

Pearl Theresa Hawkins
WENDELL — Pearl Theresa Hawkins, 89, of 221 Meadow Lane, died Sept. 5. Funeral Mass was Sept. 11 at St. Eugene Catholic Church.

She was born Feb. 13, 1918, in Detroit, Mich., and was the last living of eight children born to Michael and Stella Zachowski Howinski. She worked with Burroughs (Unisys) for 30 years before moving to North Carolina in 1980.

Surviving: daughter, Geraldine "Jerri" Hawkins of Wendell; son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence "Larry" Hawkins and Magda Hawkins of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; grandsons, Larry Hawkins Jr. and wife Brenda, Michael Manual Hawkins and wife Lori; great-grandchildren, Sammy, Corey, Jorden, Kevin, Brian, Brittany, Tyler, Katelyn.

Karen Ann Cates
KNIGHTDALE — Karen Ann Cates, 41, of 8521 Buffaloe Road, died Sept. 8 after a lengthy battle with diabetes. Funeral was Sept. 11 at Strickland Funeral Home chapel, Wendell. Burial was at Bethany Baptist Church cemetery.

She was born Nov. 6, 1965. Her grandmothers, Lois Honeycutt and Isker Curtis, and a special cousin, Melinda Carroll, preceded her in death.

Surviving: husband, Danny Cates; parents, Roy Donald and Ruby Doris Curtis of Middlesex; brothers, Sidney Curtis (Jessica) of Middlesex, Travis Curtis of Selma; sister, Tammy Gordon (Danny) of Virginia; nephews, Luke and Logan Gordon, Travis "Little T" Curtis.

Charles Guy Butler
WENDELL — Charles Guy Butler, 86, died Sept. 8 after a long illness. Funeral was Sept. 11 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Burial was at Raleigh Memorial Park.

He resided on Lake Myra Road since 1990 following his retirement and move from his long-term home in Wayne, N.J. He was born April 26, 1921, in Roseville, Ohio, son of the late John Eldon and Myrtle Butler. He was one of six children. He became a certified aircraft mechanic and was stationed in England during World War II. Following his discharge, he worked many years in industrial sales serving the Northeastern U.S. Region. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth; son, Dennis Charles; second wife, Lillian Hughes, formerly of Wendell; and longtime companion, Nettie Y. Cash.

Surviving: brother, James; sons, John Bruce of Cary, James Craig of Apex; daughters-in-law, Linda of Apex, Gwenneth of Toms River, N.J.; grandchildren, Scott of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tracey of Barnegat, N.J., Robert Charles of Morrisville, J.R. of Apex.

Lee U. Trejo
KNIGHTDALE — Lee U. Trejo, 26, of 1424 Fayetteville St., died Sept. 8 due to a motor vehicle accident. Funeral was Sept. 13 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel. Burial was at Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery, Knightdale.

He was employed with MacLeod Construction. He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Willie Earl McCullen and Charles Leamon Gurganus; uncle, Charles Bryant Gurganus; and cousin, Enrique Hernandez.

Pauline Webber Gaskins
KNIGHTDALE — Pauline Webber Gaskins, 89, formerly of Kinston, died Sept. 4 at Wellington Nursing Center. Graveside service was Sept. 6 at Westview Cemetery in Kinston.

She was born in Pitt County Oct. 5, 1917, daughter of the late Joseph Cleveland Webber and Sarah Pate Webber. She worked for Glen Raven Textiles for more than 40 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray E. Gaskins; sister, Ruby W. Lazarowitz; and brothers, Bud Webber and Sim Webber.

Surviving: daughter, Joyce G. DeBruhl and husband James of Fayetteville; sons, Edward H. Gaskins and wife Diane of Topsail Beach, Robert D. Gaskins and wife Susan of Wendell; sister, Dorothy W. White of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

She was born Dec. 25, 1924, in Johnston County, daughter of the late Millard Thompson and Pearlie Overby Thompson. She was married to Major Herbert Langdon who preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1985. She worked for the Sunday School Board as a clerk with the Baptist Book Store. She was an active member of Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Mobley; and brother, M.P. Thompson.

ASHEBORO — Alice Newell Cousins Painter, 100, died Aug. 30 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro. Funeral was Sept. 2 at First Baptist Church, Asheboro. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was born June 21, 1907, daughter of William Goldston and Helen Scarborough (Bunch) Cousins. She was a native of Wake County and a homemaker. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther L. Painter; son, Jerry E. Painter; and son-in-law, Jerry Iddings.

Frances Williamson Allcox
ZEBULON — Mrs. Frances Williamson Allcox, 83, a former resident of Edenton and Washington, and currently of Zebulon, died  Aug. 29 at WakeMed. Memorial service was Sept. 2 at Wendell Baptist Church. Graveside service was Sept. 3 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.

She was the daughter of the late Percy and Mary Ola Wood Williamson. She was married to the Rev. Sherwood Allcox, who preceded her in death in December 1993. For the past several years, she had resided at Guardian Care in Zebulon.

Surviving: sons, Sherwood E. Allcox and wife Peggy of Clinton, Irvin Lee Allcox and wife Debra of Wendell; daughter, Sherry Allcox Swartout of Panama City Beach, Fla.; brother, Hubert Williamson of Wendell; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Ralph Hendrikx
ZEBULON — Ralph Hendrikx, 88, of 1608 Ridge Road, died Aug 29. Memorial service was Sept. 1 at Strickland Funeral Home chapel, Wendell.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., he was born Aug. 5, 1919, son of the late Isaac and Marie Varr Hendrikx. He was a draftsman with General Motors. 

Surviving: wife of 63 years, Grace Miller Hendrikx of the home; son, Stephen Hendrikx and wife Brigit of Zebulon; daughter, Noreen Perry and husband Henry of Wendell; sister; Kathryn Jones of Rochester, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren.
