KNIGHTDALE — Rayford A. Parrish, 83, of 1321 Bethlehem Road, died Aug. 27 after a long and courageous battle. Funeral was Aug. 31 at Strickland Funeral Home chapel, Wendell. Burial was at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Clayton.

He was born in Johnston County March 18, 1924, son of the late Will and Vickie Parrish. He was preceded in death by a son, Ray Parrish; son-in-law, Danny Ferrell; and sisters, Lottie Wilder Phillips, Gertie Davis and Helen Massey. He retired from Hockaday Heating and Air.

Surviving: wife of 63 years, Virginia C. William Brantley

ZEBULON — William Brantley, 81, died Aug. 27. Graveside service was Aug. 30 at Zebulon Town Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 3, 1926, a son of the late Graham Vann and Ina Medlin Brantley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Carter Brantley; sisters, Margaret Moore, Addie Hales and Inez Black; and brothers, Weldon "Bud" Brantley, C.H. "Butler" Brantley and Larry Brantley.

Surviving: daughter, Janie Donaldson and husband John of Zebulon; sisters, Betty Denton of Zebulon, Willie Williams of St. Mary's. Ga., Frankie Bissette of Virginia Beach, Va.; granddaughters, Pam Hight of Zebulon, Michelle Woody and husband Chris of Zebulon; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Whitney Hight.

Jean Woodlief Inge

RALEIGH — Jean Woodlief Inge, 75, died early Aug. 29 at Rex Healthcare. Funeral was Aug. 31 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Burial was at Raleigh Memorial Park.

She was born in Wake County March 22, 1932, daughter of the late Rancher Winston Woodlief and Ethel O’Neal Woodlief. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth W. Crabtree; and brother, Woody Woodlief.

Surviving: husband of 57 years, Jack Ransom Inge; daughters, Cathy I. Teulings and husband Bob of Cary, Debbie I. Pegg and husband Steve of Raleigh; son, Jack Inge and wife Sheryl of Raleigh; grandchildren, Shelly Tedder, Brittney Inge, Ransom Inge; sisters, Mary W. Whitaker of Greenville, Judy W. Coleman James Clay

WARRENTON — Coleman James Clay, infant son of Cole Gregory Clay and Jessica Alene Marshall, died Aug. 25 at Maria Parham Hospital. Funeral was Aug. 29 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale.

He was born July 13, 2007. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Veronica Burkadt.

Surviving in addition to his parents: maternal grandparents, James and Margaret Marshall of Akron, Ohio; paternal grandparents, Bob Gregory “Greg” Clay of Alaska, Bonnie J. Clay of Port Charlotte, Fla.; many other family members.

Beatrice Josephine Van Valkenberg Burns

KNIGHTDALE — Beatrice Josephine Van Valkenberg Burns, 90, formerly of 1704 Village Squire Circle, Raleigh, died Aug. 25 at Wellington Nursing Center, Knightdale. A Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 29 at St. Eugene Catholic Church, Wendell. Graveside service was Aug. 31 at Shandaken Catholic Cemetery, Phoencia, N.Y.

She was born in Ulster Park, N.Y., Nov. 8, 1916, to Isaac F. Van Valkenberg and Elizabeth Straley Van Valkenberg. She was an assistant supervisor at Kem Plastic Playing Card Co., retiring in 1979. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Cuslee Burns, in 2004.

Surviving: son, Michael Joseph Burns and wife Ann Glenna of Knightdale; grandson, Michael Jacob Burns of Garner; granddaughter, Rae Ann Burns of Boone.

Katherine Anne Wall Hopkins

KNIGHTDALE – Katherine Anne Wall Hopkins, 76, of 1600 Hoppy Hill Drive, died Aug. 20 at Wellington Nursing Center. Funeral was Aug. 23 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Knightdale. Burial was at the church cemetery.

She was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Wake County, daughter of the late Irvin Bennett Wall and Mary Johnson Wall. She graduated in 1949 from Knightdale High School and married P.D. Hopkins on April 4, 1953. She retired with 25 years of service as a key punch operator with N.C. state government. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving: husband, Frederick Lorenzo “P.D.” Hopkins; daughters, Melodie Hopkins Smith and husband Jerry of Raleigh, Jennifer Hopkins Berry and husband Greg of Knightdale; grandchildren, Rachel, Michael and Luke Smith, Nathan Berry.

Albert Michael LaValla

RALEIGH – Albert Michael LaValla, 79, died Aug. 17 at his home. Memorial service was Aug. 25 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Inurnment was at Raleigh Memorial Park.

He was born April 23, 1928, in New Rochelle, N.Y., son of the late Victor E. LaValla and Michelina Alfano LaValla. He graduated from Albert Leonard High School in New Rochelle, N.Y., and attended night classes at NYU. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married the love of his life, Lorraine DiIorio LaValla, on Aug. 29, 1948, at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle, N.Y. He was employed with Burroughs Wellcome Co. and relocated to Raleigh in 1970, retiring in 1988. He was an avid golfer and member of The Raleigh Fun Golfers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph LaValla and Michael LaValla; and sister, Aqualina Pennetta.

Surviving: wife, Lorraine DiIorio LaValla; brother, Frank LaValla of Bradenton, Fla.; sisters, Mary Bilotto of Danbury, Conn., Victoria Aloia of Fairfield, Conn.; many nieces and nephews.

Justin Michael Spielvogel

APEX – Justin Michael Spielvogel, 15, died unexpectedly Aug. 19. Memorial service was Aug. 24 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale.

He was born Sept. 3, 1991, in Lockport, N.Y., and was a sophomore at Middle Creek High School. He was known for the odd jobs he handled for various neighbors. He was an avid computer gamer, competing with friends worldwide. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond Palmer.

Surviving: mother, Linda Palmer Spielvogel of Apex; father, Andrew P. Spielvogel of Apex; brother, Joshua Spielvogel of Apex; maternal grandmother, Rosemary Palmer of Canandaigua, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, Donald L. Spielvogel of Arcade, N.Y., Eleanor L. Anna Mae Davila

JACKSONVILLE – Anna Mae Davila, 85, died Aug. 21. Graveside funeral service with military honors was Aug. 24 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

She was a first-grade teacher in the Onslow County School System for over 20 years, most of those at Morton Elementary School. She was an advocate of children and animals, serving 15 years as a Guardian ad Litem and was a member of CAPPS for many years. She personally adopted a number of cats and dogs through the years. She was a proud American, supporting the Republican Party serving at state and local levels. She was also proud to be a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. She was preceded in death by her husband, Trinidad J. Davila.

Surviving: daughters, Kandie Styron of the home, Nickie Highland and husband Bruce of Liberty, Mo.; son, David Davila and wife Sherri of Knightdale; grandchildren, Jay, Heather, Chris and wife Saralynn, Bryan and wife Lynn, Stefani, Adam, Natalie; great-grandchild, Aden; sister, Betty Miller; nieces, nephews and many cherished friends.

Gene Allen Lambert

KNIGHTDALE – Gene Allen Lambert, 68, of 102 W. Merlin Drive, died Aug. 16 at The Brian Center in Clayton. Funeral was Aug. 18 at Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church, Wendell. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born in Stanly County March 31, 1939, son of the late Richard Boone Lambert Sr. and Ruby Bowers Lambert. He graduated from Endy High School in 1957 and attended Devry Institute in Chicago, Ill. He owned Lambert’s Lawn Care and worked as an electronic technician foreman with Electronic Sound Equipment Co. in Knightdale for 29 years. He enjoyed golfing with his friends, working in his yard and spending time with his family. He was a member of Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving: wife, Jennifer Jones Lambert; daughter, Sherry Lambert, Carrigan and husband, Jimmy of Waxhaw; sons, Chad Everett Jones of Pembroke, Chester Grant Jones of Knightdale; brothers, Wayne Lambert and wife Linda of Mebane, Richard Boone Lambert Jr. and wife Betty of Mebane; granddaughter, Alicia Marie Griggs of Waxhaw; two great-grandchildren; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Hilda Jones of Wendell.

Colleen Busick Wilson WAKE FOREST – Colleen Busick Wilson, 77, died Aug. 12 at her home while surrounded by her family. Funeral was Aug. 15 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Entombment was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Zebulon.

She was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Rockingham County, daughter of the late Johnny Busick and Alma Barham Busick.

Florence Margaret Jones Handt

RALEIGH – Florence Margaret Jones Handt, 94, died Aug.11 at Mayview Convalescent Center, where she had resided since May 2006. Funeral will be Aug. 16 at Friendship Baptist Church, Raleigh. Burial was a Raleigh Memorial Park.

She was born Sept. 27, 1912, to John C. Jones and Pearl Smith Jones in Perrysville, Ind. During the Depression, she moved to Chicago, Ill., where she later married Luther Handt and raised her two children in Oak Forest, Ill. She retired as a mail sorter with the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 and moved to Raleigh in 1984. She attended Friendship Baptist Church where she was an active member of the ladies’ Bible class. She was also a member of the Hayes Barton Methodist Grand Age Club and NARFE as long as her health permitted.

Surviving: daughter, Christine Handt Hermann and husband Dr. Robert M. Hermann, DDS, of Raleigh; son, William F. Handt II of Danville, Ind.; grandchildren, Scott Hermann and wife Joy of Wheaton, Ill., Brittany Hermann and Meredith Hermann, both of Raleigh, Deanna Handt Finney of Plainfield, Ind., William F. Steven “Steve G. Hodge

RALEIGH – Steven “Steve” Glenn Hodge, 53, died Aug. 13 at his home. Funeral services will be held Aug. 17 at Knightdale United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born Oct. 8, 1953, in Wake County, son of the late Billy C. and Evelyn Sanderford Hodge, and was preceded in death by a brother, Al Hodge. He was a self-employed painter.

Surviving: wife, Vanessa B. Hodge; brothers, Bill of Wendell, Brad of Selma, Scott of Knightdale; sisters, Karen Malmquist of Knightdale, Tonja Patterson of Selma, Emmy Haveri of Goldsboro; several nieces and nephews.

William C. Chasteen

WENDELL – William Cecil Chasteen, 77, of 84 Hanor Lane, died Aug. 11. A funeral service will be held at a later date in Fort Payne, Ala.

A native of DeKalb County, Ala., born Jan. 24, 1920, he was son of the late William Noah and Rena Chasteen Miller. He was a U.S. Army veteran, was a sergeant with the High Point Police Department and worked for Ford Motor Co. for many years. He was a sports enthusiast, loved bowling, and was a plate umpire. He was a member of Wendell Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by son, William Dale Chasteen.

Surviving: son; Mark Chasteen and wife Lulane of Raleigh; daughter, Shelia Chasteen Green of Raleigh; brother, Clyde Miller and wife Marilyn of Montgomery, Ala.; sister, Carolyn Clifford of Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Marie Watson Finch

ZEBULON — Marie Watson Finch, 91, died Aug. 3. Funeral was Aug. 6 at Zebulon United Methodist Church. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens. She was a native of Wake County, daughter of the late C.M. and Vevie Nowell Watson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Finch.

  Evelyn Maloye Hinton Williams

EMIT — Evelyn “Maloye” Hinton Williams, 81, died Aug. 4. Funeral was Aug. 8 at Friendship Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Born Jan. 12, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Coy and Lola Hinton, formerly of Emit, a lifelong farm owner and community notable.  She was married for 49 years to L.D. Williams of Raleigh, who preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of the family farm in Johnston County, with the exception of a short time spent residing in Raleigh.  She led a dutiful career in state government that spanned 31 years. She was a member of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, a brother, Kevin Hinton, preceded her in death.

Gardening, antiquing, traveling, collecting porcelain dolls, and crafts were among her favorite pastimes. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Wendell chapter No. 87.  She was also an avid reader. Family and friends will remember her most for her ability to grow a variety of flowers, many of which grew in the same plots her mother tended. Church roles such as flower committee chair and Women’s Auxiliary treasurer were definitive ones, but the times she was found cleaning the grounds, watering flowers and organizing will be what she will be remembered most for. Her positions within the Order of the Eastern Star ranged from various star points, Worthy Matron in 1984-1985 and again in 1989-1990, and District Deputy Grand Matron in 1995-1996.

Surviving: son, Ricky Darwin Williams and wife Pamela of Garner; grandson, Justin Darwin Williams of Garner; sister, JoAnne Lewis and husband Alvin of Charlotte; brothers, Bobby Hinton and wife Jean of Garner, Harold Hinton of Garner, Donald Hinton and wife Marie of Fayetteville, Richard Hinton and wife Lois of Garner; sister-in-law, Hazel Hinton of Hope Mills; a longtime special friend, Dorothy Perry of Wendell.

  Alice S. Barham

ZEBULON — Alice Smith Barham, 90, of 10518 Covered Bridge Road, died Aug. 5. Graveside service was Aug. 7 in Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.

A native of Ware Neck, Va., she was born Feb. 11, 1917, daughter of the late Jim and Emma Spangler Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallie Barham, who died in the Korean War.

Surviving: son, Julian Barham and wife Elaine of Zebulon; daughters, Joyce B. Moore and husband Bob of Indiana, Pa., Judy Castleberry and husband Larry of Clayton; sister; Margaret Stevens of Williamsburg, Va.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

James Clyde Blackley

ROLESVILLE — James Clyde Blackley, 84, died Aug. 5 at Wellington Nursing Center in Knightdale. Funeral was Aug. 8 in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Burial was in Rolesville Baptist Church cemetery.

He was born in Wake County, son of the late Lucille Moody Blackley Weathers and Herman Eddie Blackley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Baker Blackley; and sons, Gilbert Blackley and Phillip Glenn Blackley. He was a retired machinist with Schrader-Bellows in Wake Forest and was a member of Rolesville Baptist Church.

Surviving: daughter, Audrey B. Hunter and husband Harold of Raleigh; son, Donnie Clyde Blackley and wife Phyllis Blackley of Raleigh; sisters, Lorene B. Horton of Wendell, Doris B.
